THE FOCUS

This mid-terraced property in Exmouth was converted into short term accommodation for single people, with high occupancy requiring care in services design to reduce overheating risk, and a need for the building to be easy to use for residents. As Passivhaus Designers we undertook fabric detailing and services consultancy.

While the front façade with decorative brick and sash windows needed to be retained, the rear and inside were a blank canvas, and as a result a mixture of internal and external wall insulation was used. Achieving the required airtightness on the project proved to be a challenge, as there were unexpected (due to the age of the building) cavity walls which only became apparent during works on site. As a result providing airtightness advice and on site support formed a significant part of our role.
